Altera and Eureka Technology Announce Delivery of First 64-bit
PCI Master/Target Megafunction
Cost-optimized for FLEX®10K and FLEX6K 6000 devices
Supports data transfer rates up to 266 Mbytes/second
Los Altos, Calif., (May 26, 1998) -- Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR)
and AMPPSM partner Eureka Technology Inc. (Los Altos, Calif.)
today announced delivery of the first 64-bit PCI Master/Target solution
optimized for programmable logic. Eureka's megafunction, the EC-240,
has been optimized for both the Altera® FLEX 10K and FLEX 6000
families; the first implementation was on an Altera EPF10K30A device
that sells for $18 in high volume.
The 64-bit PCI Master/Target megafunction, designed in synthesizable HDL, requires
only 950 logic cells and zero embedded array blocks. The function operates at
33 MHz, in compliance with PCI Local Bus Specification Rev. 2.1. It also sustains
burst transfers up to 266 Mbytes/second. Altera verifies the performance of all
megafunctions offered by its AMPP partners.
"This is a cutting-edge megafunction solution which occupies only 55% of
the logic on a EPF10K30A device," said Bob Beachler, Altera's director of
development tools marketing. "The FLEX 10K family is ideal for applications
requiring a DMA controller or FIFO, embedded memory functions that can be mapped
into the embedded array blocks. For customers who do not need to use embedded
memory in their design, an implementation on an EPF6016 device is even more cost-effective,
occupying 72% of a device priced at $10 in high volume."
Advanced PCI Master/Target Megafunction
The 64-bit PCI Master/Target megafunction is a bus interface unit designed for
efficiently interfacing between the PCI bus and any user-configurable back-end
device. The megafunction operates as a bi-directional PCI bus interface, performing
all data transfers necessary for the user-defined back-end device to access PCI
memory or I/O. PCI access is initiated by a bus-mastering device, such as a video
coprocessor or a DMA controller, via the back-end interface of the EC-240. To
support this environment, the megafunction comes with a set of back-end design
templates available in Altera Hardware Description Language or VHDL.
"By providing the 64-bit PCI Master Target megafunction, we are helping
design engineers stay on the leading edge of PCI bus system development,"
said Simon Lau, president of Eureka Technology. "The EC-240 addresses the
needs of very high bandwidth applications such as real-time imaging and communication
base stations.
Pricing & Availability
The 64-bit PCI Master/Target megafunction is currently available for evaluation
via Altera's OpenCore capability, at no charge, through Eureka Technology's homepage
on the worldwide web at http://www.eurekatech.com. Pricing for an encrypted netlist
begins at $11,750. In addition to the megafunction, Eureka also offers a constraint
file for timing and fitting, a simulation file, and an installation guide.
About AMPP
The Altera Megafunction Partners Program, established in August 1995, was created
to bring the advantages of design reuse to users of Altera PLDs. AMPP is an alliance
between Altera and developers of megafunctions that encourages megafunction development.
Altera provides technical information and training to the AMPP partners, who create
megafunctions targeted for Altera programmable logic devices. More information
about AMPP is available on the Altera web site at http://www.altera.com.
